index (50/50)
This website documents surface conditions within the historical building complex of Kasárny Karlín, located at 50.09069°N, 14.44421°E, Prague, Czech Republic. Constructed between 1846 and 1849 by Vojtech Lanna, Kasárny Karlín was the largest military facility of its kind in Prague. The structure is a classicist five-storey building, protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic since 1958. In recent years, the former military courtyard was used as a cultural and social space for relaxation and leisure activities. Inside the building was abandoned until this year, when the Academy of Architecture, Arts and Design in Prague moved in due to the reconstruction of their building and started using the first floor of Kasárny Karlín as their temporary home. The project does not attempt to document the history of the building nor its architectural significance — focusing rather on what the past leaves behind — broken walls, dried out paint, mud. Each texture is a representation of what time and usage can do to a building such as Kasárny Karlín. The index is not organized by place within the building, surface type or aesthetic value. The website concludes with an example of texture treatments made in Adobe Photoshop, showing the possibilities and usage of textures in the digital world. Each texture can be found and downloaded here.
